Length converter and distance converter formula

Usually, a conversion factor is used to convert the lengths and distances of objects.

When we know the conversion factor, converting between units becomes a simple problem of multiplication:

It will take the form:

B * D = E

Where B is our starting value, D is our conversion factor, and E is our end converted result.

You can simply convert from any unit into meters.

For example, if you want to convert 40 centimeters to meters, you just need to multiply by the conversion value in the table below.

40 cm * 0.01 [ (m) / (cm) ] = 0.4 m

Of course you can also do the reverse.

You can convert from meters into units like centimeters. Thus, just divide by the value in the right column. Alternatively, you can also multiply by the reciprocal 1/x.

0.4 m / 0.01[(m) / (cm)] = 40 cm

To convert any other units of length into meters, you can multiply the value by the conversion factor. Thus, you will obtain the result in the desired unit.

Then, you can divide by the reciprocal of the conversion factor to receive the value in the former unit.

For example, to convert from centimeters to inches you would multiply by 0.01 then divide by 0.0254. Or, multiply by 0.01/0.0254 = 0.3937007. So, to convert directly from cm to in you multiply by 0.3937007.

Refer to this table to make the conversion easier:

Distance converter light years

We will now look at how we can convert light years to kilometers.

A light-year (also light year or lightyear, ly), is not a SI unit of length but it is quite important in making astronomical calculations. One lightyear is approximately a little less than 10 trillion kilometers or about 6 trillion miles or 0.306 parsecs. Actually, we can define it as the distance covered by light (moving in vacuum) in one Julian year.

On the contrary, the kilometer is just the most popular unit for calculating distances. It is a decimal multiple of the SI unit of length meter. The value of one kilometer can also be represented in a similar manner. It is defined as the length of the path traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second. A kilometer is now used as the most popular unit of measurement of land distances. For example, the distance between two districts can be around five kilometers. However, the United States and the United Kingdom do not follow this rule.

The length and distance converter can convert any unit to any other.

The conversion factor is 1 light-year [ly] = 9460730472580.04 kilometer [km].

The steps you have to follow are:

Firstly, choose the units you want to convert to and from.

Secondly, enter the value in the desired unit.

Thirdly, click on the ‘convert’ button.

Finally, the small result box at the top shows the necessary conversion.

Thus, it is very easy to convert values using length converter and distance converter.

Distance converter UK

The UK Driving Distance Calculator is useful for two reasons.

Firstly, it calculates the Distance and, Secondly, the Driving Directions between any two addresses (say villages, towns or airports) in the UK.

Obviously, it is a GPS Monitored system that makes the process simpler. This distance and driving directions are displayed on an interactive map. Further, this map is labeled as Distance Map and Driving Directions UK.

The distance between cities of the United Kingdom is calculated mainly in kilometers(kms) or miles. Further, you can also use nautical miles to express the inter-city distance . Additionally, the distance in miles gives you the information about the mileage between cities. For this, they use the UK mileage calculator.

The steps to find the distance are:

  • Firstly, enter the “Distance From” city, village, town, airport or place name from the UK in the first text box.
  • Secondly, enter the “Distance To” city, village, town, airport or place name from the UK in the second text box.
  • Thirdly, you can also enter the airport name or code from the UK in the above fields.
  • Fourthly, this will display the dropdown with suggested places in the UK; Select the desired Address /Place /City /Village /Town /Airport from both the dropdown lists.
  • Finally, click the “Get Distance & Directions” button to get the distance between the selected addresses /places /cities /towns /villages /airports in the UK.

Distance converter kilometers to meter

A kilometer (symbol: km) is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). Though it is not the SI unit of length, it is actually quite popular. Precisely, the value of one kilometer is 0.6214 miles.

Apart from the United States and the United Kingdom, most other countries use kilometer currently as the official unit of measurement for expressing distances between geographical places on land. However, the United States and the United Kingdom (UK) still follow their rule of expressing distance in miles.

Unlike the United States, the UK has adopted the metric system. The government of the United Kingdom and its industries has gone a long way in adopting the metric system. However, you can still find its imperial roots when their citizens express distances in miles.

A meter(symbol: m), is the base unit of length and distance in the International System of Units (SI).

Hence, it is used most of the time. People generally try to express small distances in meters. We can define the meter as the distance traveled by light in 1/299 792 458 of a second. However, this definition changes slightly at times. For example, it was slightly modified in 2019 to reflect changes in the definition of the second.

How to convert distance to meters

Being the SI unit of length, the application of meters is worldwide. We use it to make measurements such as distance, height, length, width, etc.

However, the United States is the only country to not practise this. It largely uses US customary units such as yards, inches, feet, and miles instead of meters in everyday use.

Perform the following steps to carry out the conversion:

Firstly, enter the value in the desired unit.

Secondly, click on the ‘convert’ button.

Finally, the small result box at the top shows the necessary conversion.

Thus, it is very easy to convert values using length converter and distance converter.

5.   What is the relation between distance and length?

Ans: Length is the measurement of something. The thing we measure can be a line, or a garden or even the dimensions of a room.

On the other hand, The distance between two objects tells us how far apart they are. We can easily measure the distance between any two cities or two points.

Most importantly, length or distance can never have a negative value.

6.   Why is measuring length important?

Ans: Things are measured for a variety of different reasons, but in everyday life this is usually to find out how big, how long or how heavy something is, or its volume, length or mass. So, it is very important when dealing with measurements to always state the units being used.

Length converter and distance converter general questions

1.   What are the rules for converting metric units of length?

Converting between measurements in the metric system is actually easy. It is a matter of simple intuition. Just keep in mind the unit that you have and the desired unit that you want to convert the value to. Further, you can just count the number of units between the former and the desired units. Thus, you can now make the conversion accordingly.

2.   What is the meaning of length conversion?

Length conversion is the process of converting lengths from one unit to another. For example, kilometers can be converted to meters, miles can be converted to yards, yards can be converted to inches, and so on. Length conversion is needed for matching measurements across different scales.

3.   How many units of length are there?

There are seven basic units in the SI system: the meter (m), the kilogram (kg), the second (s), the kelvin (K), the ampere (A), the mole (mol), and the candela (cd).

4.   What is bigger than a km?

There are various units of length that are bigger than a kilometer.

For example, nanometer, gigametre, terameter, and megameter.

5.   Why do we rarely use the unit decimeter?

Decimeter is too wide to be used over centimeter and too small to be used over foot. So, we do not use it very often.

6.   What is the difference between centimeters and millimeters?

A millimeter is a unit of length. It is equal to one thousandth of a meter. On the other hand, a centimeter is a unit of length and it is equal to one hundredth of a meter. Both units use meters as the base unit. However, the value in centimeters is actually ten times the value in millimeters.
